Driving Through Marche - A Pleasurable Experience
Marche is positioned in the central part of Italy and one of the most picturesque regions with mountains, lakes, parks and forest plus the Italian Riviera.
On our way to
Ascoli Piceno
and the coastal town of
San Benedetto Del Tronto
driving there was a pleasure. The mountains really are breathtaking with winding roads that go on forever, some along rivers and streams. Through quiet hamlets, towns and hilltop villages that seem to cling on to the side of hills. You wonder just how they managed to transport the building materials up there - it had to have been backbreaking work. Several times we pulled over to the side of the road to admire craft work and scenery. Travelling throughout Marche and finding somewhere to pull over for refreshment is never a problem. You can find cafes and restaurants along the route and with our limited amount of Italian language ordering was never a problem. With this being part mountain region we came across road tunnels hard to avoid. The longest we encountered was around 4 km most with adequate traffic flow and lighting.
Driving in Italy on the whole I found to be just as normal as back home in the UK and Netherlands with only one concern with entering and leaving motorways, I found the slip roads very short and care should be taken.
About the cost of fuel I haven’t a clue. It’s needed to get around and on vacation is it actually necessary to know the cost of a litre of petrol or diesel? I just fill and go.
One tip about mountain towns and villages, they where built hundreds of years ago, long before automobiles. Parking in centres was sometimes difficult. To avoid driving round and round we chose to park outside centres and enjoy the walk thought old rustic streets.
And in such setting it gives you time to stroll hand in hand with your partner and for me this is just perfect…
